Ten years ago when we elected the first black president: Did we envision the resistance of the current backlash movement? I want to remind us that nothing coalesced the force we are dealing with today more strongly than the symbolism of change and hope. Let’s remember the negative force that started this movement to turn back the clock is fear. The opposite of hope. Fear now masquerades as leadership. It’s gone global. And, it only ever has one theme: What it will lose if life is fair for everyone. It is the constant refrain of lack. So, as the mouth pieces of fear clack constantly, almost endlessly: Don’t get distracted. 10 years ago, Hope won. And, we said, “Yes, we can.” Then, we did. This is what Hope winning looks like. A decade later we must clean up and ‘fess up to everything and everyone who didn’t believe a world built on hope was possible. It is. We are in it. And it is worth standing for. We are in Hope. Year 10. Don’t be weary. Vote. Regardless of the outcome, fair will outlast fear. It’s only a matter of time.

All that build up and anticipation for a “defining moment” and then what? Life continues on as it always does. Life continues on whether or not things go our way. Life continues on whether we are defined or undefined by that moment or any other. So then what? We realize we are not in a moment. We are in a practice. Something, we have to do many times repeatedly for the love, the art, the science, the freedom, and the personal enrichment of doing it. When we turn life into defining moments, then somehow the moments in between fade or diminish. We miss the forest for the trees some would say. So, let’s recapture those undefined moments as part of living. If you follow me regularly, you will read this post many times. It’s something we will continue to explore. Each time I’ll remind us to pay attention to the moments after. Our job is to ask ourselves, why did we polarize or showcase or preselect or idealize, a particular moment? The upcoming moment is the “US midterm election”. Why is our human habit of a “defining moment” showing up in our world? As you open yourself up to this personal inquiry, looking for examples of where the moments before and after were equally as important or defining. Think #brexit (nation defining) or #americanidol (culture defining). The world before and after were never the same. And yet here we are.

. . Whenever you hear, “defining moment”, my ask is you step back into the practice of life and recognize the question is always, so then what?

This is not a time to stand alone. Women are reaching out to me and I want to share some of what I am hearing. 1. Do you think the effort to downplay is fueled by men? We can downplay and divide without men. We can only fully coordinate within ourselves. This is about us making a better world for us, for men, for our sons and daughters. We have to do our part. We are being called. Those Redwood trees working together should inspire us. First us —then every human being. 2. Isn’t this a chain letter - you don’t do chain letters? This is a movement. I do movements. #powerofwomensvoices 3. We should shout out, not be silent. We should do both. We should do more. We should support when we can’t be there wherever there is. We should participate for women to be fully seen as people. We should do that for ourselves, for the women who are here the planet, and for sisters and daughters yet to come.
